Hot on the heels of Vancouver releasing their season roster, Dunedin announced theirs yesterday morning. No less than five top 30 prospects will suit up for Dunedin.
Leading the way is LHP Rickey Tiedemann (6th), and RHP Dahian Santos (28). Tiedemann’s stock rose tremendously in his 2021 draft year, and he’ll make his pro debut in the Florida State League this year. BA’s report on Tiedemann:
Tiedemann’s fastball now sits 89-92 mph and touches 94 with life out of a low slot that creates a difficult angle for hitters. His changeup is a plus offering he can throw at any time to lefties or righties, and it has the potential to become a plus-plus pitch as he adds more separation from his fastball. His hard slider has become consistently average. Tiedemann has lots of promising ingredients, but he’s still learning to put everything together.
Santos is an undersized finesse pitcher who also has that low arm slot the organization loves:
Santos is a lanky, athletic pitcher who stands out for his touch and feel. He pitches at 89-94 mph with good movement on his fastball from his low three-quarters slot. While Santos has a loose, quick arm and a bit of physical projection remaining in his wiry frame, but his game is more about pitchability than power. He’s an advanced strike-thrower for his age with feel for a curveball and a changeup. He has tight spin on his curveball, generally around 2,500-2,600 rpm. Though it can get a bit wide and slurvy at times, it’s a slightly above-average pitch. His changeup is inconsistent but he shows feel for that pitch too.
OF Dasan Brown (27) will be repeating Low A this season. There is no doubt about the athleticism, but the Oakville native has yet to put things together from a statistical perspective. INF Rikelbin DeCastro (14) was the team’s top 2019 IFA, and is a flashy defender. INF Machado (13) is a polished up-the-middle guy the organization is very high on, but was limited to one Complex AB last year. He appears to be ahead of Top 10 guy Manuel Beltre at the moment, although we suspect more roster moves will happen over the next few days.
As for sleepers on the roster, watch for southpaw Kendry Rojas, who fanned 39 hitters in 24 FCL innings last year, smooth OF Gabriel Martinez, and corner INF Adriel Sotolongo. The Cuban posted a 1.073 OPS in just over 100 FCL PAs last year. C Victor Mesia was called a “poor man’s Francisco Alvarez” by VP Andrew Tinnish when he signed in 2019. Mesia got into 21 games in the FCL last year, and another 8 with Dunedin.
We had expected to see RHP Yosver Zulueta on his roster. His 2021 season lasted all of 3 hitters before he tore up his knee in Dunedin last year. We had been told he was progressing well, but perhaps not enough for game action it would appear.
MiLB.tv subscribers will get their first look at the D-Jays in late April when the club travels to Bradenton, and then again at the Pirates’ affiliate in late August. St Lucie was just added to the MiLB.tv lineup; Dunedin plays there in mid-July.
