The Canberra Cavalry started their Australian Baseball League season a week late with an 8-4 victory at home over Melbourne in a Boxing Day tilt.
Canberra’s season-opening series with Perth was cancelled last weekend because of Covid-19 restrictions. With five import players in quarantine, fielding a team would have been difficult for the Cavs.
Blue Jays prospects Chavez Young and Samad Taylor made their ABL debuts for Canberra. Young was out trying to stretch a single into a double in his first AB, and appeared to have injured his left foot on the play. Reports had him with crutches and an air cast later in the game. Taylor went 0-2 with a walk. Former MLBer Deleon Young was in the Melbourne lineup and had an 0-4 day.
Canberra will take on Melbourne once again in a very early ( 3am) North American time zone start on Sunday. Former Blue Jays farmhand Shawn Morimando takes to the hill for the Cavalry.
